Word Study · Growing in Christ
Neither barren nor unfruitful
God did not save you to sit still. He planted a new life in you, and it is meant to grow and bear fruit.
Peter gives new believers a simple plan for growth. Start with faith, and keep adding to it:
- Faith
- Virtue
- Knowledge
- Temperance
- Patience
- Godliness
- Brotherly kindness
- Charity (love)
“For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
2 Peter 1:8Two Greek words in that verse show what God is keeping us from. Both begin with the little letter a-, which means “without,” the same way “a-” works in the English word atypical.
What this means for you
Remember the first foundation stone: we repent from dead works, things we did to earn God’s favor. Now Peter shows the other side. Once we belong to Jesus, our faith is not meant to sit without work or without fruit. As we add these qualities day by day, God makes our lives busy with His purposes and full of His fruit.
